Vance County Schools Honoring Academic Success Event

Vance County Schools hosted its first “Honoring Academic Success” event on the evening of Tuesday, May 10, for students who are among the top 10 percent of graduates in the Class of 2016 from the four local high schools. Two VGCC campuses to host Mini-Medical School summer camps

High school students from throughout the region are invited to learn about health sciences and careers in medicine by participating in the 2016 “Mini-Medical School” Summer Camp, conducted by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. Vance County Schools Bus Drivers Honored

The top three finishers in the annual Vance County Schools’ Bus Roadeo competition on April 25, were honored by the school system and the Vance County Board of Education Monday night at the board’s meeting. Bostic went on to compete in the district Bus Roadeo held in Raleigh on May 5, and finished sixth in that event. He will compete in the N.C. Bus Roadeo on May 12, at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

VGCC Culinary students excel at SkillsUSA competition

Vance-Granville Community College students recently earned two first-place awards and a second place in Culinary Arts competitions at the 51st annual SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership and Skills Conference. The college’s chapter of SkillsUSA also received recognition with a Top Ten Membership Award. Students and faculty attended the conference in Greensboro on April 19-21. North Carolina consumers are reporting dozens of calls claiming to come from IRS or US Treasury officials who demand immediate payment. On May 11, 1970, Henry Marrow, a 23-year-old African American Vietnam War veteran, was murdered in Oxford. Marrow was approaching Robert Teel’s store to buy a Coca-Cola when he spoke to a young white woman. Teel, his son and his stepson interpreted the exchange as offensive, so they chased Marrow from the store parking lot, beat and fatally shot him. Carver Elementary School hosted its annual Reading Fair on Thursday, May 5, with nine students in grades 3-5 earning awards for their projects. The Reading Fair involves each student in grades 3-5 doing a project on a book they have read.
