Washington, D.C. — Congressman G. K. Butterfield today offered legislation to make it easier for communities to acquire surplus federal electronic equipment at little or no cost.

Closings and delays
Vance County Schools will be closed for students, faculty, and staff on Thursday, February 1, 2007 due to anticipated inclement weather. Also closed are Franklin-Vance-Warren Head Start, Vance-Granville Community College, Victory Christian School, Crossroads Christian School, Vance Charter School, and Kerr-Vance Academy. County schools consider longer elementary day
At a recent principal’s meeting, the leadership of Vance County Schools discussed extending the school day for elementary schools by one-half hour.
Etheridge votes on funding bill
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), a member of the House Budget Committee, voted today for a joint funding resolution that seeks to clean up the federal budget mess in a bipartisan and bicameral fashion.

Vance dropout rate increases along with state
In 2004-05, Vance County Schools’ dropout rate was 7.52 percent. During the last school year, it was 8.26 percent.

Butterfield bill would honor George Henry White
Washington, D.C. — On the anniversary of former U.S. Rep. George Henry White’s last speech before Congress, Congressman G. K. Butterfield today offered legislation that would create a postage stamp commemorating White’s life and accomplishments.

**Updated** On January 28, 2007, at approximately 2:27 p.m., officers of the Henderson Police Department received a call of a possible shooting at the Party Pick-Up store at 655 North Garnett Street.
Youth protection ordinance forum tomorrow
This from City Manager Jerry Moss: The Committee appointed by the City Council to study a Youth Protection Ordinance will conduct a public forum in the Vance County Courthouse Main Courtroom on January 30, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. to hear input from parents, their children and others interested in this ordinance.
