I loved talking with these students from Triton and Harnett Central high schools this week and answering their questions about the governmental process and legislative policy.

Weekly Update

I began my week in Raleigh speaking to high school students who attend the all-girls Saint Mary’s School. I had an opportunity to talk about the importance of young girls serving in a public capacity, whether on a local, state or federal level. Also this week, I visited with students from Harnett Central and Triton High School on the steps of the U.S. House of Representatives. Both groups of students had fantastic questions on current events and legislation we are working to pass in the House.

Also this week, the House overwhelmingly passed two measures that will ensure the safety and security of Americans, both here and abroad, from terrorist threats like ISIS. These measures will strengthen security at our border and improve our ability—and that of our allies’—to watch, screen and target terrorist threats. Click here to read my full statement.

Also this week, we began morning softball practice for the annual Congressional Women’s Softball Game. We begin each practice with a quick warm up and then begin batting practice. Click here to learn about this very important game and what nonprofit organization we are supporting!

Snapshots from the Week

It was great speaking with Dr. Phillips from Cary, North Carolina. He was in D.C. as part of the American College of Surgeons 2016 Leadership & Advocacy Summit. It was great speaking with him about Medicare reform.

It was so awesome speaking to these bright, young women who attend Saint Mary’s High School. They had great questions about what it’s like being 1 of only 104 women serving in Congress.

I enjoyed meeting with members of the NC Council of the Military Officers Association of America. We discussed their questions and concerns on the Department of Defense budget proposal and Tricare fee hikes.

It was great having a little bit of home in Washington this week. These students from Triton and Harnett Central High Schools paid a visit to the Capitol. Many asked about Obamacare and other legislative items we were working on in Congress this week.

It was such a pleasure meeting Elizabeth O’Brien of Aberdeen, North Carolina — the Military Child of the Year. One of Elizabeth’s biggest accomplishments has been fundraising for homeless veterans, collecting more than 600 blankets in the fall of 2014 and more than 700 pairs of socks in the fall of 2015!

On Wednesday, members of the American Osteopathic Association swung by my office for a meeting. We discussed the ways that we can combat the opioid epidemic and ways that Congress can continue improving our country’s healthcare system.
