It’s not too early to plan summer camp activities for kids and grands! This year Vance County 4-H will carry a group to the Betsy Jeff Pen 4-H camp in Reidsville, from June 25th to 30th. The cost is reasonable and spaces will fill quickly. Also, tax-deductible donations can be made to help send deserving kids to camp! Vance-Granville Community College will soon host a pair of free programs for the public to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia. These educational programs are being facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter. The president of Vance-Granville Community College, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, recently recognized a group of faculty members for excellence by awarding the “Vanguard Cup” to the college’s English department. Vance County Drop Out Rate Declines
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction has announced the 2015-2016 graduation rates and the 2015-2016 dropout rates for public school districts across the state. Vance County Schools saw significant improvement over previous years in both areas. With a four-year cohort graduation rate of 81.9 percent for the class of 2016, this is a record high for Vance County over the past five years. Mid-Year Graduates from AdVance Academy at WVHS
Congratulations to the mid-year graduates from the AdVance Academy at Western Vance High School. Chris Alston, Krystyna Stallings and Jose Hernandez, shown from left in the accompanying photo, have successfully completed their high school education. They were honored at the academy’s mid-year commencement ceremony on January 26. Alston and Hernandez are going into the local workforce. Stallings will continue her education at Vance-Granville Community College.
VGCC offers Spring Mini-Term Classes
Although the Spring 2017 semester at Vance-Granville Community College is underway, there are still opportunities to register for a variety of classes offered during “mini-terms.” These sections start later during the semester, but end on May 8, at the same time as the full 16-week courses, and they include just as many hours of instruction as under the traditional schedule. Vance County Announces Keith Duncan as Fire Marshal
Vance County is pleased to announce the hiring of Keith Duncan as the County Fire Marshal beginning on November 14th. In this new position, Mr. Duncan will serve as the county’s liaison to the Volunteer Fire Departments and will be available to assist them with insurance ratings, training and other needs. He will serve as the county’s lead fire investigator and will be responsible for conducting fire prevention inspections of local schools, businesses and churches as required by the state. …
