Planning for amortization continues

The Henderson Planning Board has a short agenda that includes a long-term concern for its meeting Monday afternoon.

The board will have no public hearings, so its business boils down to two items:

* A request for a road extension from Northpark & Associates.

* Discussion of a proposed amortization ordinance.

The latter issue grew out of the concerns of the Clean Up Henderson Committee and involves a legal way to eliminate junkyards from the city.

Junkyards that existed before the city’s zoning ordinance were grandfathered in and thus immune from the zoning limitations. Henderson has been able to do little but beg and plead for the owners to end their operations.

Amortization is another option, one suggested by Rich Ducker of the Institute of Government last year and the year before. Such an ordinance would force the junkyards to close within five years.

The longer it takes the Planning Board to complete an ordinance and send it to the City Council for approval, the longer it will be until the junkyards are gone.

The board’s meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Municipal Building on Beckford Drive.
