Quiz Bowl today after parade

Kerr-Vance Academy will have homeroom advantage as it competes for a spot in the state finals of the Public Library Quiz Bowl this afternoon.

The H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library is playing host to the district competition of the Quiz Bowl at 3 p.m. in the county commissioners’ meeting room in the old courthouse on Young Street. That makes KVA the home team in the four-county contest.

KVA earned its spot by defeating Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools in the county competition. Its competition today will be Granville County’s J.F. Webb High, Franklin County’s Louisburg High and Wake County’s Cary Academy.

The winner will advance to the televised state finals April 23, according to a news release from the Perry Memorial Library.

The students on Kerr-Vance’s team are Adam Brame, Craig Burnham, Channing Elliot, Libby Hartness, Matthew Ison, Mimi Keil, Leslie MacInnes, Jason Spain and AtLee Watson. Teachers Bill Hunt, Mathew Philipose and Josh Eckenrode are the coaches.

The competition relies on volunteers and donations. Lawyer Nick Long will serve as moderator, with Dasie Roberts, Rita Smith and Joseph Pearce Jr. as judges, Marion Perry, Lynnell Flowe and Michelle Willis as scorekeepers, Barbara Fuller as timekeeper, Cathy Nowell as Quiz Bowl authority, and Alesia Stevenson as rotation authority. Support comes from Chick-fil-A, Friends of the Perry Library, the library itself, KVA, The Screen Master, Walgreens, Vance County, Vance County Schools, The Daily Dispatch and WIZS-AM (1450).

The Public Library Quiz Bowl is an annual high school academic competition that began in 1978. Teams must answer questions on subjects such as science, history, literature, art, religion and current events.

The competition is free and open to the public and should begin around the time the St. Patrick’s Day parade ends downtown.
