Opinion: City makes good use of Web

The city’s new, improved Web site is a week old today, and it’s time for all of us at home in Henderson to say thanks.

The site is not on the cutting edge of Web technology (not that we venture anywhere near that edge ourselves).

It’s not the most beautiful thing online (again, we’re not ones to talk).

It’s not a finished masterpiece (the calendar, for one thing, needs to show a lot more than City Council meetings).

There are plenty of things we would tweak (the central photos on the front page change too quickly, for example, and we don’t get the use of the horse as one of the permanent photos in the banner).

And none of that matters.

What does matter is that Henderson now has an online presence that works. It’s easy to find your way around the Web site, and that means it’s easy to find almost any information you want.

“It’s not perfect, but it’s a far sight better than we had,” City Manager Eric Williams said.

Until last week, it not only was a challenge to find the information or the form you needed from the city, but it was tough to find the right person to ask. Now entire departmental staff directories, complete with job titles, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, are at your fingertips. And you often won’t have to talk to a person because so much information and so many forms are there at your convenience.

“We really do want to use this Web site as a way to get information out,” Williams said.

That’s what the Internet should be about: making it easier for anyone to get information. It’s nice to see that the city of Henderson gets it.
