Pick of the day: Crunching the numbers

It’s crunch time for local budgets, with only nine days left in the fiscal year, and Vance County and Henderson are set for simultaneous action toward accomplishing their fiscal duties today at 6 p.m. The county commissioners are due to meet at that time in the old courthouse to pass a budget with a 2-cent increase in the property tax rate. But the meeting at the same time at the Municipal Building could be more interesting: The City Council’s Finance and Intergovernmental Relations Committee will meet six days before the scheduled adoption of the city budget. We don’t know what to expect, but we know a FAIR meeting Monday was postponed to give the number crunchers more time.
