Choices three for fate of Armory


At tonight’s Vance County Board of Commissioner’s meeting, the board plans to make a propostion to the City of Henderson advancing three scenarios for the dispostion of the jointly owned Armory and former library on Rose Avenue. That document may be viewed here.

Six appointments for presentations top the to-do list for the meeting to be held tonight at 6:00 p.m. in chambers at the Vance County Administration Building.

* Planning and Development Director Ken Krulik will present yet another draft of the county-wide zoning ordinance.

* Local businesswoman and social advocate Deryl von Williams will discuss her Vance County Learning Center with commissioners. She will ask the board to consider funding her project.

* Dera Adair of the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments will present a bid list for the Scattered Site Project. This project will demolish two existing, dilapidated, and occupied dwellings and replace them with new homes. It will also pay for the relocating of the displaced families.

Oakwood Homes of Henderson is the low bidder for the project.

* Tax Collector Sam Jones will present his quarterly report. His documentation may be viewed here.

* Anne Bunch and Vincent Jefferson of the Vance County Appearance Commission will present information on upcoming events for its Autumn Education Project 2006. They will also request that the board recognize the winners of the Art and Essay Contests during its November meeting.

In September, “Beautifly” will visit each kindergarten with a skit on putting litter in its place and it bring a bag of recycling goodies for each student. The effort will involve members of the Appearance Commission, Clean-Up Henderson, and Terri Hedrick of Vance County Schools.

In October, middle school students will be invited to parcitpate in an art or essay contest entitled “Recycling – Bring It On”. Cash prizes will be offered.

* Benny Finch of the Economic Development Commission will go before the board with the following requests.

* Three budget amendments will be considered. The first will appropriate funds for the Sheriff’s Office for a Justice Assistance Grant. The second will use state and United Way funds for a parenting program. The third will use sheriff’s interdiction money to purchase cell phone contracts for 20 units.

* County Manager Jerry Ayscue will report on several staffing vacancies: a Social Worker A & T postion in the Child Protective Services Unit; four Correctional Officer I positions at the Vance County Jail; one Telecommunication I at 911; a request from 911 to recruit two Telecommunicator I positions approved in the 06-07 budget; and a Firefighter II/EMT-P.

The board will go into closed session to discuss a property matter and a personnel matter.
