Two families remain at Beacon Light

Community Development Committee Chair Garry Daeke reported at Monday evening’s Henderson City Council meeting that a request had been sent to HUD that single-family housing be constructed on the Beacon Light site.

Daeke further reported that HUD responded to the request by asking for demographic data reflecting housing needs information before proceeding with the demolition of existing structures on the site.

Henderson Mayor Clem Seifert inquired as to whether there is a legal obligation to make HUD demolish the structures.

Action City Manager Mark Warren responded that the federal department has a legal obligation to comply with city ordinances.

City council member Lynn Harper explained that HUD wants compelling information that Henderson does not need more rental apartments.

No problems have been reported with former Beacon Light residents finding suitable Section 8 rental housing in Henderson.

When Daeke asked for clarification that no one still resided at Beacon Light, he was surprised to be informed by Acting Police Chief Tony Clark that two families were still living there.

Daeke commented that the city needed to find out why they were still there. He also stated that he had thought everyone was out.

HUD discontinued paid security at the complex two weeks ago. The Henderson Police Department is still providing extra patrols through the area.

Warren noted that the families need extra assistance.
