HVEP pushes for zoning with petition, ad

At the Henderson-Vance Economic Partnership meeting on Thursday, chair Eddie Ferguson told members that the organization has endorsed county-wide zoning.

Ferguson asked members to circulate a petition in favor of zoning.

The chair also noted that the names appearing on the petition will be used in an advertisement, presumably in The Daily Dispatch, to promote zoning in Vance County.

Ferguson also took the opportunity during that part of the meeting to announce the presentation of Professor David Owens regarding zoning which took place the next day at Vance County School’s Administrative Services Center. Ferguson characterized Owens’ presentation as presenting “facts” on zoning.

The Partnership also discussed the following items:

* Tourism Director Nancy Wilson talked about the Show, Shine, Shag, and Dine annual automobile showcase event to be held in Henderson on October 21 through 23. Members discussed not only the success of the five year-old event, but also how to make local businesses and residents more aware of the economic impact of the show.

* Betty Jo Shepheard from Senator Richard Burr’s office was introduced to members of the Partnership. Shepheard is located in Rocky Mount and covers 28 counties for the senator. Henderson City Council and Partnership member Lynn Harper had taken her on a tour of Henderson to highlight the issues of crime and ecnomic development.

* Harper took an opportunity to announce a possible rental permit or occupancy permit tha is being developed by the city’s Community Development Committee. She said that she is sure there will be opposition to it, but that something must be done to turn around the housing stock in the city.
