Literacy Workshop
Claire Ramsey and partipants in Saturday’s Literacy Workshop

The first of three literacy workshops, sponsored by Every Child Ready to Read and H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library, was held Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Claire Ramsey, head of Youth Services, conducted the session in the comfort of the children’s amphitheatre.

Ramsey’s passion for reading and teaching kept participants fully engaged. Adding to the experience were two little children who seemed to perform on cue with the subject of the moment.

An actress as well as a librarian, Claire Ramsey’s presentation was down to earth and full of animation. She emphasized the importance of talking out loud to babies before and after birth.

Her conviction is that a child who is talked to, sees others reading and is read to on a daily basis, “learns to learn” and is preparing to succeed in school.

The amphitheatre space, which can be closed off from the main library, is ideal for a variety of youth activities. Although large and full of light, the carpeted seating area creates a sense of connection and security. The youth of our area will soon discover all the adventures the library and Claire Ramsey can provide.
