Butterfield appointed a chief deputy whip

Washington, D.C. — House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi and Majority Whip-elect James Clyburn today announced U.S. Rep. G. K. Butterfield’s appointment to a key role in leadership for the upcoming Congress.

Butterfield and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Fla., were appointed to work with Clyburn as Chief Deputy Whips. They join U.S. Reps. John Lewis, Ga., Maxine Waters, Calif., John Tanner, Tenn., Ed Pastor, Ariz., Janice Schakowsky, Ill., Joe Crowley, N.Y., and Diana DeGette, Colo., who served in this role during the 109th Congress.

Majority Whip-elect James Clyburn said Butterfield played an important role in his successful House leadership campaign, and said he believes Butterfield will be a great asset as part of the Democratic leadership.

“G. K. is an extremely energetic and organized person who is well-liked by the members,” Clyburn said.

Clyburn also said that Butterfield traveled extensively during the election cycle in support of other candidates and that he understands that Americans are demanding a new direction from its Congressional leadership.

“He knows first-hand that people across the country want change in the next Congress, and Democrats will bring change in the form of a raise in the minimum wage, cut in student loan interest rates and a fair and open legislative process.” Clyburn said.

Speaker-elect Pelosi joined Clyburn in praising Butterfield.

“He has illustrated his ability to work effectively with his colleagues and to tackle the crucial issues facing the American people,” Pelosi said. “With his keen intellect and commitment to integrity, he will provide the leadership our Caucus needs to take our country in a new direction for all Americans, not just the privileged few.”

Under Clyburn’s direction, the Whip team is charged with mobilizing the party vote on important legislation, acting as a liaison between Members and the Democratic Leadership and coordinating strategy within the party.

“I’m proud to be part of a leadership team that will work hard to move America in a new direction,” Butterfield. “Being a part of the majority leadership will also help me in bringing needed resources to eastern North Carolina.”
