To the editor: Taxation and representation

Dear Readers,

I just wanted to get the opinion of the people on an idea I once heard.

I had asked the readers before in a post but I was ignored, so I figured I’d ask again now that election season is over and there’s less to talk about.

How would you all feel if all county elected offices or elected boards could levy a tax? Let me explain. Instead of the county commissioners being solely responsible for levying taxes, how would you feel if commissioners simply levied a tax amount based on the needs that come straight to them (infrastructure, library, Medicaid, social services, etc)?

However, the school board, instead of going to the commissioners, could levy a tax on top of the commissioner tax based upon the needs of the schools. The school board, would then also, be directly accountable to the citizens and if it appeared that they were not doing enough with the tax money they received, they could be voted out.

Same with the sheriff’s office. The sheriff could directly tax the citizens as much as he wanted, and wouldn’t ever be able to complain to commissioners that he’s not getting enough money for the jail, manpower, etc. If the sheriff taxes too much or is wasteful, give him the axe.

By this rule, of course the clerk of court and register of deeds may also have taxing authority. But perhaps these offices could be omitted, particularly a register of deeds, which when ran effectively, may generate the money to pay for itself.

The county commissioners, from what I’ve seen, unfairly end up taking a lot of blame because they delegate how all the county tax money is spent. Perhaps they shouldn’t.

Sincerely,
