A night of public hearings

The Henderson City Council has seven public hearings set for tonight’s regular meeting at 7:00 p.m. in its chambers at City Hall.

The first public hearing will deal with the controversial Youth Protection Ordinance. At issue is whether or not Friday and Saturday curfew hours will be extended until 11:00 p.m. for minors under sixteen years of age, and whether or not businesses will be held liable for minors on their premises after curfew hours.

The next hearing will consider curbside garbage collection. The Council is considering a proposal to convert all of Henderson to the weekly curbside system, elminating the current twice-weekly backyard pickups currently made. A decision on this issue is needed before April 1 of this year. According to the City Manager, the switch would represent a significant savings for the City.

There will be a continuation of the Time-Warner Entertainment/Advance Newhouse cablevision franchise renewal hearing.

Two of the public hearings will deal with specific rezoning requests.

Of the last two hearings, the first will deal with a text amending to the zoning ordinance regarding business signs. The second will deal with an amendment to the subdivision regulations.

During the guest presentation/public comment portion of the Council meeting, Charles Powell will present on behalf of the Corbitt Preservation Society. Henderson City Council member Bobby Gupton also plans to show a PowerPoint presentation on City and County taxation and funding ratios for joint City/County projects.
