Boys and Girls Club members give step revue at yesterday’s Open House
The Vance Unit of the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina held an Open House at L.B. Yancey Elementary School yesterday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The purpose of the Open House was to thank donors for their contributions and to let the public know the progress of the Club to date.

Several local and regional politicians attended, including Vance County Board of Commissioners Chair Deborah Brown, as well as Commissioners Eddie Wright and Danny Wright.

City Council member Garry Daeke, who also serves on the Vance County Unit Board of the Boys and Girls Club, was also acknowledged during the evening in his official capacity.

State Representative Michael Wray was present for the festivities as well.
Currently, the Vance Unit serves approximately 132 children between the ages of six and twelve in two locations in Vance: L.B. Yancey Elementary School and E.M. Rollins Elementary School.

Vance Unit President Elaine Chavis-Young served as the Facilitator for the meeting.
The Reverend Brenda Peace, Pastor of the Greater Little Zion United Holy Church gave the invocation.

Vance Unit Board Vice President Jason Feingold deferred his welcome address so that Club member Kembe Champ could give the welcome instead.

After Chavis-Young gave a history of the Club from its earliest planning stages to its latest incarnation, Board member Janet Mills was given special recognition for her fund-raising efforts.

Chief Professional Officer Judy Johnson and Unit Director Ron Williams then introduced the staff of the Vance Unit Boys and Girls Clubs.

Regional Boys and Girls Clubs of America Director Duane Hinshaw
After Club member presentations, including the reading of essays and a step performance, Duane Hinshaw, the Regional Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America spoke and presented Chavis-Young and Johnson with the Vance Unit’s charter.

Closing remarks were made by Keith Smith, a member of the Corporate Board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina.
Wray
After Smith’s remarks, Wray spoke in support of Club, telling guests that “children are the future” and speaking favorably of the contributions of private industry and individuals towards the goals of the Club.
