Chamber, United Way, Volunteer Ctr. supply drive

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, and the Volunteer Center are collaborating for a Back to School Supplies Drive scheduled for Friday, August 10.

The event will take place from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Chick-fil-A on Dabney Drive.

Area residents are encouraged to donate new school supplies that will be distributed by the United Way Volunteer Center and Vance County Schools for area children returning to school.

Donations will be received in the left rear parking lot of Chick-fil-A, and vehicles will be able to drive through to drop off their donations. Chick-fil-A will also provide a complimentary token of appreciation to everyone that drives by to drop off supplies. The goal is to fill the Orange School Bus that will be on location.

Chamber President Bill Edwards is excited to be involved with this effort. “The Chamber thought it was a great idea to partner with the United Way and Volunteer Center for this School Supply Drive,” he said. “We can use innovative ways to bring in a number of our Chamber partners to help us with our efforts,” he continued. Edwards noted that Chick-fil-A, The Daily Dispatch, Home in Henderson, US 98.3 and WIZS (AM 1450) are all assisting with promoting the event.

The fact that this coming weekend is the North Carolina Sales Tax Free weekend should be beneficial to the drive as well. “If they are able, we are would like to encourage area residents to pick up extra school supplies while they are stocking up this weekend for their own families,” said Edwards. “And, by shopping Henderson and Vance first, they will spur our local economy.”

The tax-fee shopping dates for this year run from August 3 through August 5. The exemption applies to clothing, footwear and school supplies under $100, sports and recreation equipment under $50, computers under $3,500 and computer equipment under $250.
