City approves GED career development plan

At its regular meeting on August 13, 2007, the Henderson City Council unanimously approved a GED Career Development Plan for City of Henderson employees.

Vance-Granville Community College and the City of Henderson will partner together to offer all of the City’s employees an opportunity to get their GED.

Leo Kelley, VGCC Dean of Adult Basic Education, will coordinate the efforts by helping the City set up a mobile computer/classroom at the Operations Center if such a set-up is determined to be conducive to learning.

The program will be offered in two-hour classes held twice per week after work hours.

According to Human Resources manager Pam Brame, twelve Public Works Department employees have signed up for the GED class.

The City will pay for each employee’s GED exam. Once the employee obtains his or her GED, the City will reward them with a 5% salary increase.

The laureled employee will also be invited to participate in the VGCC graduation ceremony.

After the employee completes this phase of the Career Development Plan, or if an employee already has his high school diploma or GED, employees will be encouraged to participate in Phase II of the Plan.

Phase II is to be announced soon. The second phase may not pertain to all City employees. Each City department will be evaluated for a Career Development Plan customized to the department’s needs.

City of Henderson employees interested in participating in the GED Career Development Plan are encouraged to call (252.4305706), visit or e-mail Pam Brame, Human Resources Manager, City of Henderson.
