State Board of Ed. meets this week


The State Board of Education will meet next week, Sept. 4-6, in the Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Globally Competitive Students Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Kathy Taft and Tricia Willoughby, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on the K-2 Literacy Assessment and discussion on field testing and special studies for this school year and policies governing services for children with disabilities. Members also will receive updates on the graduation project, financial literacy and middle school courses for high school credit.

5:00 p.m.

Board members will honor retiring State Board of Education Staff Attorney Harry Wilson and departing Legislative Liaison Rita Joyner at a dinner at Moe’s Diner in Raleigh.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 8:30 – 10:15 a.m.

The Business/Finance and Advocacy Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Kevin Howell and John Tate, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on grant approvals and additional legislation requiring immediate action for fiscal year 2007-08. Members also will receive updates on Communications activities, NC WISE, the Legislature, Connectivity Project and Allotment Formulas.

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The 21st Century Professionals Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Shirley Harris and Eulada Watt, will meet in Room 504 (Video-Conferencing Center), Education Building. Agenda items include action on a proposed revision of the standards for the evaluation of superintendents, changes to the job descriptions and salaries for occupational therapist assistants and physical therapist assistants, and approval of Institutes of High Education performance reports. Committee members will discuss revision of license renewal requirements to reflect legislative activity and receive an update on the status of the Lateral Entry Committee and the Task Force on Teacher Recruitment recommendations.

10:30 a.m. – noon

The Leadership for Innovation Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Melissa Bartlett and Tom Speed, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on recommendations for preliminary approval of 2007 charter school applications and an update on school turnaround efforts.

5:45 p.m.

The Board will meet in whole in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. The Board’s afternoon session will focus on its Information Agenda including a briefing on literacy coaches, the high school workforce development program (Learn and Earn Early College High School Initiative), the Department’s comprehensive, consolidated assistance program, and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Testing and Accountability. Committee chairs will present reports to members summarizing discussion of their various agenda items.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Board members will recognize their new student advisor and Graduation Project Award recipients, and receive a presentation from Karen Wells, executive director of NC Arts.

At 9:15 a.m., Board members will take action on the 2006-07 ABCs Report and 2007-08 Assistance Program. The Board will recess at 10 a.m. for a press conference on the ABCs results to be held in Room 150 of the Education Building.

The Board will reconvene at 10:30 a.m. when it will receive reports from the Chairman, State Superintendent, and Deputy State Superintendent, and take action on agenda items as appropriate.
