Wray appointed to Gov’s Crime Commission

Raleigh — Rep. Michael H. Wray has been appointed by House Speaker Joe Hackney to serve on the Governor’s Crime Commission.

The 44-member commission advises the Governor and the Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety about protecting individual rights, promoting public safety and other criminal justice issues. Members include private citizens and representatives from local governments, the courts, the General Assembly and law enforcement.

The commission also distributes money from federal block grants awarded to North Carolina. These grants are issued to government, social service and education agencies to create new and innovative programs to improve our criminal justice system, prevent gangs and crime and help victims of crimes.

“I am humbled by the amount of responsibility I have been entrusted with and look forward to working with my fellow citizens to reduce crime in our state, promote civic responsibility and protect our people,” Rep. Wray said. “The safety of the people of this state has always been a top priority of mine, and this appointment will give me another way to make sure the people of North Carolina are well-protected.”

Rep. Wray’s term on the commission expires in February 2009.
