Sheriff holds report on Vance County Jail

Vance County Sheriff Peter White appeared before the Vance County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting on Monday evening to report on mandated repairs to the detention facility.

White told commissioners that although he had a report, he was not satisfied with the numbers.

The Sheriff told the board that he would meet with the state’s chief jail inspection on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to clarify what needs to be done to the jail, if there is “leeway”, and to get help prioritizing the repairs.

“I’d feel better with his guidance,” White said.

White stated that the minor repairs had already been done, and that conditions at the lockup were not “life-threatening”.

“I think that’s wise,” Commissioner Eddie Wright said about White’s plan.

When Commissioner Deborah Brown, Chair of the Board of Commissioners asked White to clarify that he did not want to share figures with the Board, White responded that he did not want to give “false figures”.

Commissioner Terry Garrison asked if waiting would cause problems.

“None that we don’t already have,” White responded.

White is expected to make a full report at November’s regular commission meeting.
