Tuesday’s open line

Watching too much Star Trek really is unhealthy, especially when you’re six. Who knew?

When I was a kid, I always thought that by this moment in history the world would have come together somewhat in both thought and deed (with America leading the way, of course. Captain Kirk is from Iowa, after all.). Clearly, the opposite it is true as the globe continues to Balkanize along political, ethnic, and religious lines.

We ourselves are not immune to this force of history. Movies like The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ bring about flurries of ideological debate usually not seen until the last month before a presidential election.

With these thoughts in mind, is the movie The Golden Compass a well-told family adventure or a seditious undermining of the beliefs with which we want to inculcate our children?
