The Vance County Relay for Life kickoff meeting was held yesterday at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Maria Parham Medical Center.
The Vance Count Relay for Life, which raises money for cancer research under the auspices of the American Cancer Society is one of Henderson’s most successful charity drives and a community centerpiece.
The theme for this year’s event is “24 Hours at the Movies”. Each team will pick a different movie and decorate their tent in the character of that film. No two tents will have the same movie.
Organizers emphasized that movie choices should be tasteful and appropriate to the event.
Sign-ups for teams to choose a movie will begin at the first official Relay meeting on February 7, 2008.
This year’s goals include raising $213,000, including 43 teams, and accepting donations for 1,500 luminaries.
Luminaries celebrate those fighting cancer and commemorate those who have died of the disease.
Last year, the Relay raised a total of $204,204 or $4.65 per capita.
Cindy Robinson, Kim Yates, and Liz Catlett, co-chairs of this year’s Relay stressed during the meeting that the recruitment of teams is the event’s greatest need.
This year it will be easier than ever for teams an individuals to register with the Relay for Life. On-line registration is available at www.vancerelay.org. (A link to the Relay for Life site may be found on Home in Henderson by clicking on the Relay banner ad or on the link under “Featured Links” in the left margin.)
Through the Web site, team captains will have the tools to maintain their teams on-line. Also, each team and each individual on the team will be provided with their own customizable Web page.
Luminaria can also be purchased on-line.
The site will also report top teams, top participants, and top companies in real time as contributions are tallied. A new award is being added to the event this year for on-line fundraising.
