Vance commissioners agree to new elementary school

The Vance County Board of Commissioners agreed during a special called meeting yesterday evening to allow the construction of a new elementary school.

The new school will allow the aging Clark Street Elementary School facility to be retired while drawing students from several other elementary school districts to ease crowding in other facilities.

The proposition of a new public school in Vance County has drawn a mixed reaction from both citizenry and elected officials. In a discussion that was renewed this summer, commissioners dismissed from the realm of possibility a proposed middle school on a site already purchased by Vance County Schools and deeded to Vance County across Garrett Road from Southern Vance High School.

The initial decision to locate new schools near Southern Vance was for the purpose of sharing infrastructure with the existing facility.

It is unknown at this time whether or not a time frame has been established for construction.
