The State Board of Education will meet this week, Jan. 7-8, in the 7th Floor Board Room (unless otherwise noted), Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Wednesday, January 7 – 8:00 — 10:00 a.m.
Business/Finance and Advocacy Committee
State Board members Kevin Howell and John Tate, co-chairs

Action items include: More at Four funding rates, North Carolina Virtual Public School Advisory Board nominations and approval of the Personal Financial Literacy Teacher Grant.

Discussion items include: appointment of individuals to the State Evaluation Committee on Teacher Education, membership for the Council on Educational Services for Exceptional Children and the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

Healthy Responsible Students Committee

Action items include: Report on Gang Prevention and Intervention.

Discussion items include: School at risk of being labeled a Persistently Dangerous School.

Globally Competitive Students Committee

Action items include: Allowing retest results in the calculation of performance composites of the ABCs and AYP results, changes to the 2007-08 ABCs/AYP results and Report to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee: Implementation of the ABCs Statewide Consolidated Assistance Program.

Discussion items include: Participation in the American Diploma Project Algebra I and II exams.

21st Century Professionals Committee

Action items include: Revised teacher education specialty area standards.

Discussion items include: State Evaluation Committee Teacher Education Program and Alternative Lateral Entry Program approval recommendations and Report from Phase I LEAs implementing the Teacher Evaluation Instrument.

Leadership for Innovation Committee
State Board members Melissa Bartlett and Tom Speed, co-chairs

Action items include: Enrollment increase requests above 10 percent and Charter School grade expansion.

Discussion items include: renewal recommendations for charter schools with charters expiring June 2009 and Children’s Community School and Community Partners Charter High School name change request.

Thursday, January 8, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Special Recognitions:

– Introduction of new Local Board of Education Advisor to the State Board of Education, Wendell Hall, Hertford County Board of Education, and winner of the North Carolina School Boards Association’s Raleigh Dingman Award.
– Memorial honoring Dr. Weaver Rogers, former executive director of the State Board of Education.

– Plan for Statewide Assistance for Schools

Members will receive an update on the Framework for Change during the Chairman’s remarks followed by a report from the State Superintendent. Members will then receive reports from Committee chairs and take action on Board items as appropriate.
