To the editor: Spay now, save money later

Dear Readers & Friends of Wild at Heart:

The days and nights leading up to, through, and following Groundhog’s Day to Valentine’s Day are intense when fertile female domestic cats come into their first seasonal heat cycle.

The gestation period is 63 – 65 days. Thousands will be born. Hundreds may end up at county animal control facilities without forever homes available.

Please take a fertile female cat to the SNAP (Spay-Neuter Assistance Program) low-cost spay-neuter mobile van that comes to each of the local counties monthly or to a veterinarian for spaying. You and your neighbors can also pool resources and trap the untamed fertile female that calls on your neighborhood home and take her to SNAP or a veterinarian for spaying.
SNAP will spay a feral for $50.

The telephone number for SNAP is 919.783.7627. Ferals are also welcome at trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs. TNR programs can be located through a web search.

Save dollars by spending dollars and lower the incidence of heartbreaks.
