“Operation Blue Lightning” nets gun, drugs, cash


On April 21, 22, and 23, 2009, a training exercise was held in Henderson along Interstate 85.

This training exercise focused on drug and criminal interdiction. This project was coordinated by members of the Henderson Police Department’s Highway Traffic Safety Unit. A total of twelve other agencies from across North Carolina participated in this training. These Departments included police departments from Roanoke Rapids, Durham, Archdale, High Point, and Lexington. Sheriff Departments involved were from Nash, Sampson, Chatham, Wake, and Rutherford County. Members from the State Bureau of Investigation and the D.E.A. also participated in this operation.

This project resulted in 332 vehicle stops. These vehicle stops resulted in the arrest of numerous individuals on eleven various misdemeanor charges, five felony drug charges, and 21 other traffic charges. Two fugitives were also taken into custody. Officers seized one handgun, 34 pounds of Marijuana, ten grams of cocaine, and $176,000 determined to be proceeds from drug sales.
