Money missing from Vance County tax office

** UPDATED **

A preliminary report shows that approximately $7,000 in cash and an unconfirmed $53,000 in checks is missing from the Vance County Tax Office.

“There is a missing deposit,” County Commission Scott Hughes confirmed in a telephone conversation with Home in Henderson. Hughes was unable to confirm the dollar value of the missing checks, but gave an approximate amount of missing cash.

In that conversation, Hughes revealed that the deposit was discovered missing some time before Christmas.

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the missing funds. If that investigation does not yield results, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will be called to look into the matter.

According to Hughes, the writers of the missing checks have been notified.

The following press release was received from County Manager Jerry Ayscue at 2:16 p.m. today:

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office is engaged in an ongoing investigation of a report of a missing bank deposit bag with receipts from a county office. Public funds are required by law to be deposited daily, and the contents of the missing bag were prepared accordingly for deposit into a local bank. Additional security measures have been implemented.

The full-scale investigation includes the use of polygraph tests.

Anyone with information regarding the missing depost bag and its contents is urged to contact the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at 252-738-2200.
