Rainey: Need to stop negative comments

During a discussion of jointly funded projects with Vance County at Monday’s meeting of the Henderson City Council, member Mike Rainey criticized what he termed “negative comments” in Henderson.

“Until we stop negative comments in this town, we’re not going to get anything done,” Rainey said.

He went on to say that there is a need to change the attitude of the community in the media.

Rainey also claimed that the state is reluctant to give Henderson money “because we’re too negative”.

Member Mary Emma Evans expressed agreement with Rainey’s words, saying that there are “different avenues promoting that negativity.”

“We all know where it’s coming from,” Evans said. However, neither Evans no any other member of the council named a particular Henderson medium as the source of the negative comments.

The Daily Dispatch, Home in Henderson, and WIZS 1450 AM have a presence on the Internet and the capacity to allow the public to make comments on news items and other issues. In addition, WIZS hosts a mid-day show called Town Talk during which listeners are encouraged to call the radio station to ask questions of guests and make comments.

The Ward 1 council member said that she believes that Henderson is better than what is being promoted.

Ward 2 At-Large representative Mike Inscoe cited an editorial in The Daily Dispatch that talked about good things happening in the community and applauded the newspaper for that.
