NC Special Olympics team wins gold

Since the opening ceremonies on July 18, 50 athletes, 14 coaches and four staff members have represented North Carolina at the Special Olympics USA National Summer Games in Lincoln, Nebraska.

To Team North Carolina, congratulations on behalf of the entire state for your remarkable achievements!

To name a few:

– Powerlifter Charles Quick of Durham won Gold with a deadlift of 270.1 lbs. Charles also won three silver medals in the squat, bench and combined events.

– Team NC’s basketball team from Charlotte went 4-1 losing by only one point in the gold medal game to Kansas — a classic basketball rivalry!

Other highlights of the week included SBI agent Karen Morrow representing North Carolina in the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which relayed the Special Olympics flame of hope across Nebraska so that it arrived in time for the opening ceremonies on July 18.

And Ryan Baker of Onslow County turned 19 years old on Monday, July 19. It turned out to be a day-long celebration for the track runner. He was toasted by his Team NC teammates and his family with two cakes after dinner and later set a personal best in the 400m.
