Henderson city council extends irrigation credit

The Henderson City Council voted unanimously during its regular meeting yesterday to extend the irrigation credit through October of 2010.

This means that qualifying residents will continue to receive a credit toward the sewer portion of their water bill for water used for irrigation through their October water bill.

The item was brought to the council by member Garry Daeke. Daeke said that he had been contacted by several residents regarding an extension of the credit. Arguing for an extension, he noted that the summer has been unusually dry, and that many residents are reseeding their lawns and will be doing so through October.

Daeke noted that beautifying property and maintaining property values is something the council wants residents to do.

To qualify, customers must use 1 1/2 times their average amount of water use. They are then credited 75% of that amount on their sewage bill.

The council routinely grants an irrigation credit to customers for the months of May, June, and July. It has not extended by additional months in recent years because of drought conditions.

Customers who have already paid their September bill without receiving the credit may apply for September’s credit on their October bill.
