Henderson City Bond Refinance coming; HPD officer “Enzo” retires

Reporter – Leigh Hester – Henderson City Council members met Monday night to close out the Fiscal Year 2010 budget, falling about $150,000 short of projected revenue but closing the budgetary gap through tightening spending throughout the year. Also approved was a motion to award a contract to Phillips, Dorsey, Thomas, Waters & Brafford, P.A., to audit the City’s financial records for year 2010-2011.

Also at the Council meeting, K-9 officer “Enzo”, an 8-year old veteran of the Henderson Police Department, was retired due to age and health issues. Enzo will retire to the home of his handler, Sgt. G.L. Williams.

The Henderson Police Department alerted the Council of the receipt of the BJA Justice Assistant Grant, which is shared between the HPD and the Vance County Sheriff’s Department. Funds received from the grant will be used to pay overtime to HPD officers working on their Community Revitalization Project.

The City of Henderson will be refinancing its bonds and the Council agreed to move forward in awarding the refinancing of the 2001 city bonds to SunTrust Bank, lowering the paid interest rate from 5.10% to 2.40%.

Also, Melvin Gray was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Recreation and Parks Commission, and Arthur A. Henderson was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Planning board. Many appointments remain to various committees should any Citizen of Henderson feel called to serve.
