Monday Open Line

This evening holds an eventful meeting session with the Henderson City Council, the Vance County Board of Commissioners and the Vance County Board of Education all holding sessions.

Over the weekend, Congressman G. K. Butterfield (D-NC) made the following statement regarding the President’s speech to a joint session of Congress: “I believe that the President is on the right track, and I am pleased with his proposal to make crucial investments in education and infrastructure; investments that must not be delayed. The American Jobs Act will create jobs, provide a much needed jolt to our ailing economy and provide small businesses and hardworking Americans with the tools they need to compete in the 21st century economy.”

The Presidents weekly address focused of course on the September 11th attacks. President Obama paid tribute to the first responders, those who have served, and those who lost their lives ten years ago in the September 11th attacks.

Yesterday fighter style jets flew over our own house numerous times. It’s not unusual for them to do so occasionally passing by only once, but yesterday they seemingly circled our area for around an hour or so. Not sure what was going on , maybe they were patrolling, or maybe they were fighting them over here before they get over there… or something to that effect.

You may or may not have heard, but North Carolina politicians have been discussing banning gay marriage for a while now.  I have refrained from mentioning it here so far, as it’s just been a lot of talk, but now’s the time with a nasty move by senate leaders Friday.  The move modifies an already existing bill in the senate that was supposed to be discussed today regarding speaker and pro term limits  to remove the text of the original bill and completely replace it with text regarding adding adding an amendment to our state constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman, and would also place a line on the 2012 voter ballots to see if voters agree or disagree.

Senate Leader Phil Berger’s Chief of Staff Jim Blaine said there was no attempt to hide anything. “Under Senate rules, we don’t have to notice meetings until midnight the day of the meeting, and at the same time send out a PCS.”  Then why tell the public you’re talking about term limits Monday, when you’re really planning to debate the marriage amendment?  “Well, that’s the name of the bill,” Blaine answered.

You can read the full details on WRAL’s site with an interesting exchange regarding the move by senate leaders and WRAL reporter Laura Leslie.
