Vance-Granville Community College has selected 13 outstanding students to serve as ambassadors during the 2011-2012 school year. Ambassadors represent the college at special campus and community functions, among other duties.

This year’s ambassadors include Caroline Gautier of Durham (an Associate Degree Nursing student); Jennifer C. Apple of Franklinton (Associate Degree Nursing); Ligaya Carissa S. Aguas of Henderson (Associate Degree Nursing); Jon M. Baumgardner (Associate Degree Nursing), Johnnie Hawkins, Sr. (Associate in General Education-General Science), Helen Samuel (Associate Degree Nursing) and Milen Samuel (College Transfer), all of Oxford; and Ruthie Davis of Warrenton (Accounting and Business Administration).

In addition, for the first time, VGCC has selected student ambassadors from Vance County Early College High School, one of four early college high schools that the college operates in partnership with local school systems. VGCC officials hope to expand opportunities to become ambassadors to students at the other three high schools next year. The VCECHS ambassadors include Etasha Cheek, Paige Norwood, Jennie Robinson and Sarah Robinson, all of Henderson, and Liana Parsons of Oxford.

To qualify as an Ambassador, a student must have attended VGCC for one year and have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. Each nominee undergoes committee interviews. Ambassadors receive special training through workshops covering leadership, motivation, hospitality and etiquette. In order for them to be helpful and responsive to visitors, they receive instruction in the college’s history, programs and services. Their duties include serving as guides or hosts and hostesses at events such as graduation, orientation for new students, annual scholarship awards ceremonies, college-sponsored concerts and activities at the Civic Center, and the annual Career Day. For their services to the college, ambassadors receive a scholarship and a VGCC blazer. For more information about becoming a VGCC student ambassador, call Kay Currin at (252) 738-3409.
