The Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, March 19 at the college’s Henderson campus.
At that meeting, North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission board member Pete Burgess of Henderson presented the college with a symbolic check for $25,000 representing the recent Project Skill-UP grant awarded to VGCC. Project Skill-UP grants were developed by the Trust Fund Commission in collaboration with the N.C. Community College System to help individuals in rural counties of North Carolina that were affected by lost jobs, wages, or income due to the decline in the tobacco industry. Skill-UP funds can be used to help students pay for tuition, books, fees, uniforms and other supplies. The College has received funding from the Tobacco Trust Fund Commission for Project Skill-UP each year since 2006.
Also during the meeting, upon recommendation by the Budget Committee, the Board voted to adopt the 2012-2013 County Current and Capital Outlay Budgets as presented, contingent upon approval by appropriate county commissioners in the four-county area. The total amounts requested from each county are: Vance County, $1,239,054, plus a special one-time capital outlay request of $465,000 for building, roofing and HVAC repairs; Granville County, $693,234, plus a special one-time capital outlay request of $305,000 for building repairs; Warren County, $183,112; and Franklin County, $346,887.
In other business, dates were announced for upcoming VGCC events. On Monday, April 16, the College will host a reception for Dr. Stelfanie Williams, who joined the College as president on Feb. 1. On Tuesday, May 8, the VGCC Endowment Fund will hold its annual golf tournament at the Henderson Country Club to raise money for scholarships. Later that same week, on Friday, May 11, the College will hold its annual curriculum graduation exercises. The Adult Basic Skills graduation exercises will be held the week prior, on Thursday, May 3. The public is invited to attend all of these events.
The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
