Women in military uniform serving in dangerous areas of the world are no longer a cause for surprise. It all started this week in 1942, when an act of Congress made it possible for women to enlist for noncombat duties in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Its members were called “WACS.” At the time, only single women could join and they were prohibited from either smoking while walking or chewing gum in public. By 1978, women were integrated into the regular Army. Today, they account for almost 39,000 officer and nearly 167,000 enlisted personnel on active duty in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.

Thank you Home In Henderson for advertising the need for proctors for end of grade exams. I observed one class of students at Eaton Johnson. I have two observations from this event.
First, all almost 24% of the students in the group I observed and proctored are left handed. Normally only 15% of the population is in their right mind. Got to be one of the smartest group of students in the whole school based on the statistical data about lefties.
My second observation, 100% of the students appeared to be trying their best to correctly answer the questions.
If you have a few hours to help proctor an EOG exam, I recommend it. You will get more from the time than you put in to it. No promise that you will be with those in their right mind.
Is it just me or is the Rev. Rick Brand stuck at the top and can’t move?
mudball: He has been in the same location–Divine intervention?
Dispatch is reporting City 2 cent real estate tax rate hike plus== you guessed it we get hit with higher water , sewer and sanitation rates.
Prudence,
The “sanitation” charge on my last bill was $26.00, above and beyond in price compared to everything else on the invoice. It’s funny because we have a “water bill” and the least expensive item on the bill is the “water”. Fees are what drives up the total, not the original purpose for the bill. What are the figures you are reading?
The problem is that people cal it the ‘water bill’. Its a water, sewer, and sanitation bill, and the third part is filled with additional charges for recycling, code enforcement, capital debt, etc., in an effort to raise revenue by not increasing property tax, but by charging all households( users).
I really dislike property taxes for obvious reasons, so raising revenue by hitting all households as uses of service seems to be more fair. As a city resident, i despise county property taxes even more, cause I feel I benefit very little from them, and they are even HIGHER than the city. And then there’s the joint programs…..
