Butterfield Responds to the Supreme Court Ruling on the Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) today issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA):

“Today’s Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and the individual mandate is a tremendous victory for our nation.  Every modern U.S. President has acknowledged the urgency of healthcare reform, but President Obama and Congressional Democrats successfully answered the call with the passage of this law.

“As a result, 40 million Americans can enjoy without uncertainty access to affordable healthcare.  The law protects several underserved communities–from seniors and children to women and small business owners.  But it also benefits all Americans by providing access to free preventative services, expanded prescription drug coverage, and allowing young adults to remain on their parent’s insurance until the age of 26–just to name a few guaranteed benefits under ACA.

“The political theatre Republicans orchestrated around healthcare must now come to an end.  Congress debated.  The Court has decided.  It is time to move forward.

“I now call on my Republican colleagues to abandon their resolve to repeal ACA, and to work responsibly with Democrats to help implement this critically important measure.”
