Sadly I missed the free meal at Thursday night’s Commissioners meeting. I had another commitment and was not aware that Commissioner Wilder was proving dinner.
Tonight’s Commissioner’s meeting should be a short meeting and one filled with blue sky. If anyone thinks the hospital will write a check for $800,000 in property taxes did not attend the May meeting to hear the hospital’s initial volley against that idea. The County may have won the first round in this fight. Anyone familiar with corporate-think knows the County has not heard the end of the hospital’s objection to the $800,000. In the long run the County might win, doing so the County will need to spend a couple hundred thousand unbudgeted dollars in legal fees to fight the hospital for the full $800,000.
In the meantime there are 63 LLCs, other businesses, and private individuals who collectively owe $740,647.88 in past due property taxes on multiple parcels for the years 2001 – 2011. Most of the LLCs own rental property that leases to those benefiting from US government subsidies. The average this group of 63 owes is $6,415.48. Collecting this $740.647.88 does not incur unbudgeted expenses.
