NC Cooperative Extension Updates

Hope everyone saw the interesting hydrilla article in the Daily Dispatch this past week.  As a followup, I thought I’d mention that there are actually five applicators approved by the Corps of Engineers to make treatments.  They are listed on the following web page:  http://vance.ces.ncsu.edu/files/library/91/Kerr%20Lake%20Vegetation%20Survey.pdf

That same page also contains a link to the recently completed report of the lake-wide vegetation survey conducted last year.  I would especially encourage you to look at the recommendations listed on pages 6 & 7, as well as the infestation map on pages 9 & 10.    One of the important findings of the report is that there is an awful lot of native vegetation in the lake, which was not expected, and which is GREAT news!

On another topic, I’ll be teaching a “Lunch and Learn” class at the Perry Library next Thursday, 6/28, 12 noon, entitled “What’s Bugging You in the Garden?”

If you haven’t already signed up, this is your final reminder of the Pond Workshop next Tuesday, 6/26, 5:30 pm at VGCC main campus in Henderson.  BRING AQUATIC WEED SAMPLES FOR ID!  Full details at http://go.ncsu.edu/2012ponds

Tuesday, June 26, VGCC main campus in Henderson, 5:30 pm.  Info. on aquatic weeds and fisheries management.  Bring aquatic weed samples for ID.  If you haven’t already register by calling or e-mailing, then please do so ASAP (Monday morning at latest).

WEEKLY GARDEN TIPS
1. Check vegetable gardens, flowerbeds, and newly planted shrubs to see if they need water.
2. Use care when using herbicides.  Protect sensitive plants with a sheet of cardboard.
3. Continue to spray roses for blackspot and monitor for insects.
4. Check tomatoes, flowers, and other plants for whiteflies, treat with insecticidal soap.
5.  Raise mowing height to 3.5 inches for tall fescue.
6. Clip off diseased foliage from vegetables, flowers, shrubbery to prevent spread.
7. Remember to wear heavy-duty chemical resistant gloves when spraying any pesticide, including weed killers.
8. Irrigate as needed when vegetables are starting to be harvested. They need at least 1 inch of water a week.
9. Prepare to side-dress long-season vegetables with a nitrogen fertilizer.
10. Remember to use sunscreen, long sleeved shirt, wide brimmed hat, to protect yourself from the sun.
