National Geographic magazine has named Wrightsville Beach among the “World’s 20 Best Surf Towns,” noting a great surf town is the nearly magical sum of consistent waves, inviting accommodations, friendly locals, fun nightlife, delicious food, and plenty of activities should the ocean go flat. For Wrightsville Beach, the magazine notes it’s best for ” The whole family can enjoy Wrightsville’s trademark mix of sleepy southern beach town and growing metropolis. Think catfish with caviar or barbecue with Beaujolais.”
Representative Michael H. Wray’s Raleigh Report
The General Assembly adjourned its 2012 session Tuesday, but not before it overrode the three latest vetoes issued by the governor. The decisions to reject the governor’s vetoes without attempting any compromise cleared the way for implementation of a mostly bad state budget; continued racial bias in our courts; and fast-tracked drilling for natural gas, despite environmental uncertainty and the objections of many people who own the deposits. I will provide you with additional information about each of the vetoed …

Friday / Weekend Open Line!
This is a key week in postal history. The first stamps issued by the U.S. Post Office went on sale in 1847. A five-cent stamp pictured Benjamin Franklin, while one costing 10 cents honored George Washington. Before then, there were no uniform stamps –a haphazard system of private postal services around the country had issued their own. And in 1963, the Postal Service introduced the five-digit Zip Code to help speed mail to the proper destination. That year, Americans sent …

Upheld last week by the Supreme Court, President Obama’s health reform law — the Affordable Care Act — ensures hard-working, middle class families will get the security they deserve and protects every American from the worst insurance company abuses. Insurance companies no longer have unchecked power to cancel your policy, deny you coverage, or charge women more than men. Soon, no American will ever again be denied care or charged more due to a pre-existing condition, like cancer or even asthma. Preventive …

Among the most heated topics being discussed in the current stage of the presidential election campaign is health reform, more properly the Affordable Health Care Act. Most recent figures, released last fall for the year 2010, show just under 50 million people without health insurance — that’s 16.3 percent of the total U.S. population. For children under 18, almost 10 percent were not covered by health insurance. The figures show a variation among regions of the country. The largest number …
