Jokes are often made about elderly people telling youngsters how tough they had it when they were young, especially going to school. For those of a certain age, there may be a certain element of truth to their stories. In the warmer areas of the country, classrooms in May, June and September could be exceptionally hot in the past. Now, of course, just about every school in those areas is air conditioned. The first public elementary school to be air- conditioned was the Belaire School in San Angelo, Texas, which opened this month in 1955. Now, more than 64 million students attend public schools across the nation each year. I thought of something today while reading my newspaper. There was a picture of the Reverend Billy Graham and a brief interview which he had given a few days ago. Maybe I am different from everyone who reads Home In Henderson, and that doesn’t really matter.
My thoughts went back to the articles about the President and Governor Romney which appeared here. I also thought of the enthusiastic endorsement of the President given numerous times on Town Talk by Reverend Eddie Wright. Reverend Rick Brand has joined Reverend Wright in praising President Obama on here several times. Finally, I thought to myself, “If I was running for President, who would I want on my side, Reverend Wright, Reverend Brand or Reverend Graham?
Just a thought, folks. You decide.
Healthy thoughts, dear royal rooter. I ponder the meaning of changing what has been considered a cult into a mainstream religion. I am of Mormon heritage by birth and lineage, yet I rejected the religion of my paternal history because women and people of color were not deemed worthy of equal rights in the Church. Billy Graham is an evangelic Christian fixture who has moved millions into believing that only the legalistic, evangelic Christian take on life is valid. We are, supposedly, a nation that separates government from religion. Now we have the former cult rated LDS (Mormon, Latter Day Saints) as mainstream. I have lived long enough to remember the big question of a Catholic running for the Presidency and the possible Pope influence. For four years our nation has entertained doubt regarding our current President’s ‘religious’ committment; with heavy empahsis on his Islamic sounding name. Yet, President Obama demonstrates the peace-making, diplomatic efforts that Jesus would ask of us. Who would I want on my side? Peace making Jesus, of course. Not a spokesperson or a spin artist…just a simple man with a simple message; love one another as God loves you.
Copper…Obama demonstrates what? You say he demonstrates efforts that Jesus would ask of us? Surely there is no biblical evidence that Jesus ever lied. I don’t have the time or space to list all of Hussein’s ties just during the campaign. For starters, his statement that his tax plan will only increase taxes on those single filers making over $200,000 next year. Either my CPA or three different financial advisors are misrepresenting the Dems tax plan or they need to go back to school. Just wait until April 15, 2013, when millions of Americans making $50,000 to $100,000 find out their qualified dividends will be taxed under Obama’s plan.
Copper, I will leave it up to you to dig out the “whopper” than Obama told about Libya. Oh, I doubt if Jesus ever referred to anyone as a bulls—-er as the President called Governor Romney. AOL has it online today.
That whopper wasn’t as big as the whopper regarding Iraq. That led to war. Obama is at least trying the peace making, you are my brother, approach. That IS what Jesus would have us do. I don’t say Obama is Jesus-like, I say he is trying to act on Jesus’ teachings of peace and loving one another. And yes, dear, Jesus did rebuke the self-righteous in the language of his day. And he also had a real temper tantrum chasing the merchants out of the temple. Jesus wasn’t always ‘meek and mild’; he upset the establishment and his own people. Was it Jesus’ death or rising from the dead that led you to believe? Maybe reading the beatitudes gave you your moral compass?
