VGCC Franklin Campus offers Opportunities for Learning and Training


Several continuing education and occupational training classes are scheduled to begin soon at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg.

“BioWork: Preparation & Purification of Biological Samples for HPLC Analysis” will be offered twice, first on Saturdays (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) from March 2 through March 23, and later on Fridays (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.) from April 5 through April 26. Dr. Gerald Picard will serve as instructor for the course, which is designed primarily for people who work in or manage laboratories and for students who have taken the VGCC BioWork course. Students will learn sample preparation and purification techniques used in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of trace levels of organic compounds such as drug and pesticide residues in biological samples. The cost of the course is $124.

A Beginners’ and Intermediate Sewing class will be offered on Mondays from 6 until 9 p.m., March 4 through May 20. The instructor is Janet VanJaarsveld. The cost of the course is $54 plus applicable fees.

Substitute Teacher Training will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., March 11 through April 10. Terry Alston-Jones is the instructor. The cost of the course is $120 plus applicable fees.

“Herbs: From Garden to Kitchen” is a one-night workshop scheduled for Thursday, March 21 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Betsy Benning will teach participants about gardening with herbs and how to use them while cooking delicious, healthy dishes. There will be demonstrations, tasting, and discussions involving the herbs of the evening. The cost of the course is $10.

“Upholstery 101” will be held Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., March 25 through June 12. This class will provide an introduction to the trade of upholstery. Instructor Louis Barber will educate students on the history of upholstery and the tools, equipment and supplies used in upholstering and/or re-upholstering all types of residential and commercial furniture. The cost of the course is $175 plus applicable fees.
