Broadcast advertising saw a major change on this date in 1970 — as President Nixon signed a bill into law prohibiting cigarette advertising on the nation’s airwaves. The ban went into effect on January 1st of the next year — the first major step in the ongoing debate over the public health risk of smoking. Until then, names such as Lucky Strike, Chesterfield and Philip Morris had sponsored some of the most famous shows since the earliest days of broadcasting. In 1970, U.S. tobacco firms made more than 560 billion cigarettes. Today, there remain 102 tobacco-manufacturing firms with annual shipments totaling over $40 billion. Received this in our email submissions today, passing along as I don’t have any info on this:
Does anyone know if the news story is correct about the missing bank bag? Supposedly there was an important break in the case shortly after midnight this morning. I friend of mine said he called the around and no one from the Sheriff’s office was willing to say anything on the record about a break in the case. Seems there is a lot of activity over at the sheriff’s office around the Sally Port. I heard the channel 5 was considering making the trip to Henderson to report on the news story. Someone has to know something and will tell us.
Don’t forget; today is April Fools Day.
Good one Phil. Also, Vance County is getting a big industry, and all the elected officials are paying their taxes! Would love to be at least 1 out of 2.
WIZS just reported there will be an announcement from the Embassy Square foundation that they have received a 10 million dollar bequest from a deceased person which will pay off what the foundation owes the City and to build the the performance center.
This really was reported by the radio station to expect a public announcement from the foundation and dispatch –no kidding. If I have been duped–it isn’t my fault.
Sweet. I can see it now, the Allman Brothers Band playing in downtown Henderson !!! I will require 10 tickets ( and a canonli).
They are saying “no tax money involved.” What about the $1,800,000 that the city “loaned” the Embassy and has never been repaid? At just 5% interest over the last 13 years, this would amount to around $3,500,000. They sure know how to pat themselves on the back. Boys with long arms indeed.
This venture, in my opinion, won’t help Henderson if Gateway Development gets Zoning Board to agree to “townhouses off East Andrews Ave at this afternoon’s 3:30 meeting.
JOBS need to come before MORE rental property is built with grant money. When will the boards wake up???
I thought they did at a recent request for townhomes on Graham Ave. Those neighbors spoke up well, wonder if any will show up today?
