RALEIGH — N.C. strawberries are already making appearances at grocery stores, farmers markets and roadside stands to the delight of strawberry lovers. More local berries are expected as the season hits full stride. Overall, the crop is expected to be on par with recent years.
The State Farmers Market will celebrate strawberry season with its annual Strawberry Day, Thursday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can enjoy free samples of strawberry ice cream, take their photo with Suzy the Strawberry, pick up free recipes and purchase a variety of locally grown strawberries and strawberry products from market vendors.
The N.C. Strawberry Association also will host a strawberry dessert contest with $225 in total prize money for the winning entries. Recipes should include at least two cups of N.C. strawberries, and strawberries must be a main ingredient. All entries must be in disposable containers and include the complete recipe with cooking instructions, along with contestant’s name, address and telephone number.
Desserts can be dropped off between 8 and 10 a.m. at the State Farmers Market Administrative Office at 1201 Agriculture Street in Raleigh. Judging will start at 10 a.m., and media are invited to attend. Dishes will be judged on flavor, appearance, quality and creative use of strawberries. After judging, winners will be announced at the Strawberry Day celebration in the newly completed event area located between the N.C. Seafood Restaurant and the Farmers Building.
North Carolina is the fourth largest producer of strawberries in the nation. The state’s strawberry season runs through June.
