One of the worst disasters to hit the U.S. happened on this date in 1889 — the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Flood. Torrential rains caused a nearby artificial lake, created for a fishing and hunting resort, to spill over and weaken its earthen dam. When the dam broke, it unleashed 20 million tons of water in a giant wave that roared through Johnstown, killing more than 2,300 men, women and children, and destroying the homes of thousands more. The flood remains one of the nation’s most costly, single weather-related disasters. While tornadoes take more lives< flooding is a constant threat. In the years from 2000 to 2010, a total of 694 people died in floods across the U.S. Profile America is in its 17th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

I was reading through the commissioners’ June board packet that was available yesterday afternoon on the County’s web-site. Based on the Monthly Activities Report for the Information Technology Department two of the four members of the ‘administrative staff’ are now able to use 21st century technology when attending Board of Commissioners meeting.
8. Setup new laptop for the Finance Director.
11. Configured new tablet for executive assistant (Kelley Grissom).
The remaining two are the county attorney and county manager.
At the May commissioners’ meeting I observed only Commissioners Brown and Brummitt using their laptops during the meeting. The other five commissioners still required a paper copy of the commissioners’ packet. These five luddites create extra work for the executive assistant and an unnecessary expense on the county’s budget.
This is ridiculous–just shows their arrogance as well as being unable to grasp what elementary children are doing these days.
I suggest mandatory hours of computer literacy for the Commissioners–.
The Vance County School Board met last evening–and to this point have remained silent on actions taken–ie resignations, changes, retirements, etc.
Prudence, we should all count our blessings… anytime that the Vance County School Board remains silent.
RR: There is truth to that.
It gets worse–WIZS news had a news release of a shooting on Garnett St.–more when PD releases more I guess. Director of Social Service has resigned–effective today. She’s only been there for 7 months. Today is Chief Sidwell’s last day–.
And that’s the way it is .
Will the last person to leave, turn out the lights, please.
“They said that my management style did not fit the needs of the Vance County Department of Social Services”, Fry said. This is code for we want a black person in this position.
Remember about 10 years ago, when the Operations Center on Beckford was purchased by the city? It had belonged to Lowe’s, but, of course was taken off the tax rolls. Quite a few people thought it was not a prudent move and estimated the operating cost to be close to one million dollars annually. In fact, I recall it being called a “White Elephant”. Some people speculated that one or more local businessmen were pushing the deal for personal financial gain. The city then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars modifying the building.
Read today’s newspaper to see what is being said by the current city council about this building. Is it any wonder that our taxes are so high?
Dazed–I wish she’d sue–and name the person who told her that.
Royal Rooter–Definitely remember that–also recall a truck forgot to lower the boom–and boom. It was only a matter of time before we were saddled to another white elephant.
Why was the DSS director summarily fired? What was in the paper does not ring true. What of her method did they fail to vet during the selection process? Was she abusive? Did she micro-manage the department? Was she imposing changes that threatened some tenured supervisor’s or manager’s fiefdom? It is just strange. For those with long memories you recall that Vance County fired a top notch school administrator who was requiring school performance improvements?
Why does the county need an assistant county manager? Do Granville, Franklin, Durham, or Wake county have an assistant county manager? Vance is much smaller than those four counties in area and population and growth; so why do we need an assistant county manager? Here is a thought, so that the county’s de facto power base will have their new county manager waiting in the wings when the current county manager retires. (Some of those in the de facto power base don’t pay their property taxes.) Politics works this way.
If the city intends to close the fleet maintenance garage how do they intend to service the city’s car and truck fleet?
Somebody needs to tell Mike Insoce the population decline has been helped with the increase of government subsidized housing that he favors. I wonder if he understands that the opery house permanently removed some high price real estate from the property tax base without any offset. What he should do is ask a certain preacher to pay their past due property taxes.
Great questions out in left field
Just wondering if the Vance County Board of Education plans to release to the press the actions taken on last Thursday? Taxpayers want to know–or do we?
