EMERALD ASH BORER
You may have heard in the news that we have a new insect pest in Vance County, the Emerald Ash Borer. On the bright side, I suspect that most home landscapes do NOT contain ash trees. You are more likely to have an ash tree if you have a wooded area on your lot, especially near a stream. That said, if you find ash tree with signs of this pest, please let me know. Also, please do NOT transport firewood out of Vance County, as you may inadvertently spread this pest. If you enjoy camping, it’s better to purchase firewood at your destination. More information here:  http://www.ncagr.gov/paffairs/release/2013/6-13emeraldashborer.htm

SCOUT FOR MOSQUITOES
With all the rain we have received, it’s a great idea to scout your yard weekly for standing water. Even small quantities can provide habitat for mosquitoes to breed.
A GOOD YEAR FOR MILLIPEDES
[But a bad year for people who don’t like millipedes!] More information, including control options, are found here: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Urban/millipedes.htm
