New VGCC Scholarship created by MPMC Volunteers

MPMCvolunteer-checkA new scholarship has been established at Vance-Granville Community College by volunteers from Maria Parham Medical Center. Kathy Caudle, director of volunteer/guest services at the hospital, recently visited VGCC to present contributions totaling $10,000, which will endow the new scholarship, called the Maria Parham Medical Center Volunteer Services Academic Achievement Award. According to Caudle, the scholarship endowment is the result of fundraisers conducted over the past 20 years by volunteers who work throughout the hospital. “Through the scholarship, we want to honor and remember our dedicated Maria Parham volunteers,” said Caudle, who retired June 25 after 21 years at MPMC. “We also want to recognize the importance of volunteers in many different organizations throughout our community.” She added that the college and the hospital have been partners for many years. “We have such a wonderful relationship with VGCC, particularly with the Nursing program,” Caudle said. “I don’t know what we would do without Vance-Granville. We are both such important parts of this community, and both are important to the future of health care.” She said that endowing the new scholarship will “help make sure that this strong relationship continues, while also helping students for years to come.” The scholarship is set to be awarded each year to a VGCC student meeting certain criteria. Students pursuing any Health Sciences program of study may be eligible for the award, and preference will be given to students with developmental or learning disabilities. “Supporting and encouraging these students is a cause that is close to my heart,” Caudle said.

Through the Endowment Fund, VGCC has awarded more than 7,000 scholarships to students since 1982. Scholarships have been endowed by numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff. Tax-deductible donations to the VGCC Endowment Fund have often been used to honor or remember a person, group, business or industry with a lasting gift to education.
