Major league baseball takes a pause in its regular schedule today to play its 84th all-star game. This year’s event is being held at Citi Field in New York, home of the Mets. The first midsummer all-star game was played on July 6, 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. A homer by Babe Ruth helped the American League defeat the National League, 4-to-2. In 1933, all 16 teams in the major leagues were clustered in the northeast of the country, with St. Louis being the southern most and farthest west outpost of the national pastime. That year, the mean center of the U.S. population was in southwestern Indiana. The number of major league teams has almost doubled since then to represent the far corners of the continental U.S., pulled by population growth and migration that puts the mean center in south-central Missouri. Profile America is in its 17th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

If no one signs up for a city council seat does it just remain vacant until the next election?
Will the trio of Alan Pitts, Seneca Nicholson-Pitts, and property tax non-payer Deryl Von Williams pinhead James Bailey to sign-up? Or their other bud Larry Elman to sign-up?
There are no vacant city council seats, someone has filed for each vacancy, either incumbent or new person. In theory, though, its a good question. My guess would be the council would be charged to fill it, and last time there was a vacancy, they took letters of interest, interviewed those, and then voted. ( that was when Kearney came to City).
This morning on Town Talk, a man called and identified himself as Pastor….somebody. I couldn’t understand him. He rambled on for about 10 minutes, almost becoming incoherent at times. It was obvious, though, that he disagreed with the verdict in the Zimmerman trial. A friend and I went to lunch after the program, which he heard, also, and he said that the guy was a County Commissioner. If true, that explains a great deal about the mess we have in Vance County.
By the way, for what it’s worth, I think the jury in Florida was absolutely correct in rendering the verdict they did. Mr. Zimmerman should never have been arrested.
RR: I didn’t listen to Town Talk this morning, however in the past a County Commissioner has introduced himself as Pastor, and is often given over the 3 minutes time allotted.
I,too, agree that this is indeed a glaring example of why we are where we are in both the City and County. Unfortunately, things aren’t looking up with any contenders for office as of this date.
To quote George Clooney as Ulysses Everett McGill in “Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou”, Damn! We’re in a tight spot!
The call you heard was from eddie wright. If you could understand through the inaudible uhhhh….ahhhh….etc. it’s quite clear that everytime he calls into WIZS Town Talk he has to bring up race. Royal Rooter-Prudence; you want to know what’s wrong with Vance County? You heard it 1st hand!!! Why in the world would the residents of Vance want this clown representing you on a governing body? Here’s my advice to him….if he wants to speak about the Zimmermann-Martin trial then he needs to get the facts correct and stop ASSUMING things b/c it’s obvious that when you assume……you make an ASS out of U and ME!!!!
Kudos for George Rush laying the smack down on him about bringing up race relations everytime he calls the program!!!
Had a listen to what one of our County Commissioners had to say on Town Talk recently….
Unfortunately, I was not surprised at how appalling their comments were. Suspicions are confirmed. Hatred and racism have no place in the hearts of anyone, let alone those in positions of elected responsibility. Is this really the kind of person we want leading Vance County?
No….
Mingo posted excellent ideas recently on how to begin turning our community around. They all had merit and were well supported, fundamentally sound ideas. Has the leader who spewed racist tones over the airwaves contributed anything of the sort while conducting county business? Can anyone tell me what they have contributed in the last 5 years?
Al Sharpton is not a hero and neither is that County Commissioner. Heroes live in the Bible and on the battlefield.
They did however get one thing right during their call and that was they indeed do a good job of taking our community a step back. Their thinking is easily 60-plus years old in the fact that they believe our town of Henderson and County of Vance is overtly racist. They are incorrect on this account as well.
They have made it easy for us, the voters, to make a positive change in our community and relieve them of their elected power. They obviously do not deserve it.
Again, why does a person who’s beliefs are so misguided allowed to have a direct opinion on how our tax dollars are spent?
Mojo, Unfortunately it will be extremely difficult to replace this person as a county commissioner. Why? Because he is in a “safe district”. A district carved out years ago to insure that a black represents that district. Over the years, he has been “”recommended” by the so-called Black Caucus which assures his reelection. At least three of the seven districts are considered “safe districts” under this system.
Does this system give Vance County the most qualified candidates from which to choose? Those of us who have watched our county go down the tubes over the last 25 years can answer that question. As long as this system remains in place, those who refuse to pander to the system will not offer themselves as candidates.
I will not go into detail about how a few people take advantage of the system by spreading money around to insure that their candidates receive the above mentioned endorsements. The game continues and will until the cow goes dry…and it is getting close.
I want to know more about the system you speak of, Royal Rooter. It would be nice to educate myself on it so I can learn how to dismantle it.
Filing for city council is now closed. Sadly I was unable to witness the last minute rush of potential candidates for city council. I hope that tomorrow’s paper has the complete listing. I also was unable to attend the big meeting on Thursday. Hopefully, some magic pixie dust will plant a seed from which a new industry will sprout.
I’ve been visiting with kin and friends who live in a western state. In their home town the mayor has a $200 million dollar plant to renovate their downtown. The renovations include relocating the local minor league baseball team from one end of town to another and building a new convention center to replace the 20 year old one. All of this using the taxpayers’ money backed with solid political promise of a great payout. The mayor is mum when asked pointed question about the promises of new businesses flocking to their city when they build the last convention center. He has even less to say when asked why the need to move the ball park when the owners don’t want it to move.
Will somebody please tell Jim Crawford that the public spoke in the last election when the representative from Person Co. kicked his butt in the polls!!! Take a hike Crawford b/c you are already a career politician and the time has come for you to go sit in a rocking chair and enjoy your life and your kids/grandkids lives. Is it so much of an ego-trip that you just can’t stand the thought of going out in your last election getting BEAT? I mean really….the citizens have seen/heard of your name far too long. Why not let your son run for something? Oh….he did…he tried running campaign signs with Crawford on them when he ran against Nathan Baskerville until it was pointed out that he was trying to win the election on the curtails of his dads surname.
I guess he will win the Mayor’s seat in Oxford and then he can have his ego stroked again. Some people just don’t know when to say when. SAD!!!!! Congratulations to current Mayor Sergent b/c it seems as if she will be a 1 term Mayor b/c Jimmy boy will definitely out spend her on the campaign and I’m sure he has a few locals who “owe” him a vote(or 2)!!!! The only thing worse than an athlete who won’t retire when their bodies and minds tell them to do so is a politician who can’t live without having one last stroke of his ego……even if it’s a Mayoral position!!! Sorry O-Town!!! Now you can get a clearer picture of why the State of NC is in the fiasco it’s in b/c of career politicians!!!!! I wonder how calvin harris is feeling about this b/c I’m sure he wanted Herring to win the Mayoral Seat. Too bad harris….it won’t happen!!! Here’s what you can do though…..get a group and hold a rally like you did when the incident in Fla. happened last year. How’d that turn out for you?
Deception let me give you clue about why old man Crawford is running for mayor of Oxford. Big local money wants Crawford to be boss of Oxford. Although Crawford would be a backwards step for Oxford. With Crawford and O’Geary as mayors the real power brokers have control of both cities while Crawford mines gold from the pockets of those dumb enough to patronize his gambling dens.
As I was pulling onto Dabney Drive I saw a car with R.I.P. Trayvon Martin? How much longer before people decide that this case has been tried in a Court of Law and the defendant was proven NOT GUILTY!!!!! Too many people want to play the race card that it has become lame. Vance County had one of its own county commissioners call into WIZS 1450 Town Talk last week and was whining about racism, etc. He told the host of the show that he was a 60+ year old black male and he was whining that blacks have it harder than other races and aren’t treated as equals. WHAT? If that was the case then he couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to sit around the table as a county commissioner. Too many people continue to use race as an excuse and it has become very old!! If life is so hard in the USA then I would suggest that you move to another country/continent!!!
