Greg’s Garden (February 3rd, 2014)

Greg’s Garden written by Greg and Mari Miller

Welcome Vance and Warren County gardeners to the bi- monthly newsletter “Greg’s Garden”. You will be able to read this newsletter on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. Starting with the first Monday in March, March 3rd, a link will be added to this site for a downloadable PDF file for printing off the stories and tips for later review.

This newsletter will contain tips and procedures to help the “everyday” family to plot, plant, and harvest a family garden in both a rural and city setting.

Each issue will have separate stories for PLOT/PLANTING, HARVESTING, and PRESERVING. Also included will be updates and information about the new Vance County/Henderson Farmer’s Market to open in the spring of 2014.

We hope to help the family gardener to provide healthy food options straight from the garden to the table.

Let’s start with little background on Greg and Mari Miller.

Greg and Mari Miller are home gardeners with more than 40 years’ experience in small plot gardening.

They moved to Warrenton, North Carolina in the fall of 2004. Both were skilled family gardeners when they arrived from Northern Indiana.

Greg and Mari were raised in families that grew family gardens. Each came from a family of 8 (mom, dad, and six children). Greg’s family owned a sawmill business and Mari’s father worked as a bookkeeper in a construction company. Each family had lots of mouths to feed and used family gardening to make their food dollars stretch.

First as children and now as parents, they will share their love of gardening and preserving their harvests.

Getting ready for Spring!

Tips on how to start a small family garden plot will be in the next issue on Feb. 17th!

Vance County/Henderson Farmer’s Market

This section will keep you updated on the new Vance County/Henderson Farmer’s Market that is set to open in the spring of 2014. It will provide a cross section of available food and table items for the “retired” or “leisure” family gardener who wants to purchase already grown crops for preserving or family meals.

We look forward to sharing our gardening tips and training for all of Vance and Warren Counties.
