Greg’s Garden Aug. 18th, 2014 By Mari Miller We Have Been Busy! We have 30 pints of corn and 36 pints of lima beans in the freezer to date. I will start canning my tomatoes this week. Though the green beans have been slow to produce enough for canning, we have had many at the meal table these past few weeks. Nothing says summer like fresh green beans, ham, and onions cooked in a pressure cooker to just the …

Greg’s Garden for August 4th, 2014
Dear Readers of Greg’s Garden: The garden is doing well, but nothing noteworthy to write about. But, I do want to let you read an open letter that I wrote on my other agriculture site called News and Notes about the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. I have been using space here in addition to News and Notes to promote the farmers market for those of you who want to forgo the task of growing your vegetables and buy them …
Greg’s Garden for July 21st, 2014 By Mari Miller
Tomato Harvest Starts Our tomato harvest has started. Greg brought in the first of our Roma variety of tomatoes yesterday. It will take about 2-3 weeks to be at peak production enough to start my canning, but it will be so nice to now go to the garden for my fresh tomatoes. My multi-color varieties that will make salsa and salads especially nice, are just now a hint of yellow. I look forward to having them on top of taco …
Greg’s Garden – July 7th, 2014
Greg’s Garden July 7th, 2014 By Mari Miller Waiting For Harvest We are at that point in the growing season that the early vegetables are finished and the next crop is about 2-3 weeks from harvest. We watch and water and weed. Nothing exciting except it is nice to see the little green tomatoes and the starts of the ears of corn. There are lots of blooms on the lima beans and some very small green beans hanging from their …
Greg’s Garden – June 16th, 2014
Greg’s Garden – June 16th, 2014 Written by Mari Miller Father’s Day Grilling Yesterday was Father’s Day and we celebrated quietly at our house. Our son lives in Maryland so he could not come to North Carolina to share his dad’s day. Instead Greg enjoyed himself by having grilled vegetables and the traditional Angus beef burgers smothered in all the fixings. We shared the day with laziness and quiet time on our yard swing. Greg has been promising to build …
Greg’s Garden – June 3rd, 2014
Greg’s Garden written by Greg and Mari Miller The First Harvests Are Done, What is Next? We ate the last of the fresh lettuce, spinach, and bok choy over the weekend. There remains barely one more meal of swiss chard in our garden plots. The cabbage are making their heads now, slowly curving their leaves to form the ball that will become a solid cabbage head in another 8 weeks. The cauliflower have just started to make small heads about …
Greg’s Garden (May 19th, 2014)
Harvesting our “first fruits” We have been quite busy harvesting the first vegetables from our plot garden. Spinach, Swiss Chard, Bok Choi, and Lettuce have all been to the table in these past two weeks, along with just a few fresh strawberries. Greg and I love to eat from the garden. Savings on our food dollars makes it worthwhile to keep gardening each spring thru fall. With the cost of fresh spinach topping out at $2.00 a package it only …

Greg’s Garden – March 17th, 2014
Some Plants Are Up…Some Aren’t, Why??? When we planted in February our first 6 plots of our plot garden, we seeded Lettuce, Spinach, Bok Choy, Carrots, and Sugar Snap Peas. We have two plots that are showing a good growth of plants right now, the others are very small and sporadic seedlings. This is not cause for alarm due to the different germination tables to the various seed varieties. It is always a good practice to keep your seed packaging …
Greg’s Garden (February 17th, 2014)
Written by Greg and Mari Miller How Does Our Garden Grow? Well, the plots were rototilled and then raked thoroughly to make the soil very aerated . Some lime or fertilizer can be added to the soil prior to the 4 x 4 foot block being placed around the soil. Greg raises rabbits and uses a mix of water and rabbit droppings to fertilize but 10-10-10 general fertilizer available at the Lowes in Henderson would work the same. After the …
